Lego HO 1:87 scale cars

<< Back to The Discovery

Putting the trucks aside, we now turn our attention to the cars.

Built in the HO, 1:87 scale between 1958 and 1966 there were quite a lot of models made in a variety of colours. Probably the nicest touch is they were modelled on original full-sized motor vehicles.

Starting with the Volkswagen family:

HO Scale, VW Beetle (short version) - side view.

HO Scale, VW Beetle (short version) - base plate with Lego logo.

HO Scale, VW Beetle (short version) - came in a variety of colours.

Another in the VW family of cars was the Karman Ghia. It must have been a favourite back in the day - our set had two black ones.

A little worse for wear - the white Ford Taunus 17M.

And our favourite in the collection, the gun metal grey Mercedes Benz town car.

In June 2017, we purchased the Mercedes Benz 190SL convertible.

In January, 2018 at Brickvention in Melbourne we were lucky enough to track down a Citroën DS19 on sale from a second-hand retailer, albeit in pretty average condition. We love them when they have obvious signs of wear - makes us wonder what lucky child played with them all those years ago...

POSTSCRIPT #3

We'd love to complete our collection by acquiring all the available car models - we'll settle for one of each model, not one of each model in every colour.  Selling for anywhere between US$20 to over US$1,000 per car that would be a very expensive exercise indeed...  So we need:

Fiat 1800

Ford Taunus 17M Sedan

Jaguar "E" Type

Opel Kapitän (Kapitan)

Opel Rekord 58

Vauxhall Victor Estate

VW 1500

It gets a little trickier when it comes to the VW it gets a little more complex. Bricklink has over 25 different varieties of the VW Van. Given we have a post-1961 Van and a Pickup we might aim for a MiniVan and a pre-1961 Van...

The six different styles of the VW MiniVan. (Images courtesy http://www.miniland.nl/) - we have the blue and white one one in the collection.

VW Vans with logos, most of these are rare to extremely rare and accordingly very expensive. (Images courtesy http://www.miniland.nl/)
